An activated-carbon cartridge uses adsorption on porous carbon surfaces to address suitable dissolved contaminants. Composite designs may also include a particle-filtering layer. Adsorption and mechanical retention are different tasks: adsorption sites can become exhausted without a marked pressure increase. Define the target compound, concentration, contact conditions and breakthrough endpoint rather than judging performance by pore rating or elapsed time alone.
| Selection factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Target compound | Adsorption differs between chemicals, and mixed contaminants compete for available sites. |
| Construction | Carbon blocks, granular beds and composites differ in contact behaviour and resistance. |
| Contact conditions | Flow, concentration and temperature influence loading beyond the element’s external dimensions. |
| Category | Depth Cartridges |

| Material options | Activated carbon / composite |
| Filtration objective | Define what to remove and what to retain |
| Rating / Dimensions | Confirm combinations against controlled model specifications |
| Flow / Temperature / Pressure | Specify normal and limiting operating conditions |
| Connections / Seals | Confirm installation interfaces and wetted materials |
| Cleaning / Validation | Confirm the service cycle and acceptance criteria |

Measure target breakthrough; pressure drop reflects only part of the filtration behaviour.
Use quality endpoints and hygienic management, reassessing the element after prolonged shutdown.
No. Target removal needs specific evidence, and ordinary activated carbon is not a universal desalination medium.
Adsorption exhaustion can precede blockage, so target measurements determine replacement.
