A sample vial, cap and septum form the storage boundary immediately before injection. The vial governs light exposure and surface contact, the closure limits evaporation, and the neck and base geometry determine autosampler handling. For trace or volatile samples, seal quality, residual volume and repeated septum punctures can be as important as the vial material itself.
| Selection factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Body material | Glass and polymers differ in adsorption and compatibility; use container blanks for trace analysis. |
| Closure format | Screw, crimp and snap closures must match both the vial neck and instrument. |
| Usable volume | Inserts reduce inaccessible volume, but require compatible needle depth, base geometry and positioning. |

Check dimensions, cap height and needle settings before a sequence.
Record temperature, time and puncture count; evaporation may change concentration without visible leakage.
They reduce some light exposure, but do not prevent changes caused by heat, oxygen or adsorption.
Puncturing can affect sealing or generate fragments. Validate the number of injections required by the method.
