A pipette tip forms the interface between the instrument and sample. Its seal, outlet geometry and internal wetting behaviour all influence delivered volume. Filter tips address aerosol movement into the pipette, while low-retention surfaces address liquid adhesion. These are distinct functions. Viscous, volatile and low-surface-tension liquids also require an appropriate pipetting technique and consistent timing.
| Selection factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Instrument fit | A reliable cone seal matters more than similar appearance; poor fitting can leak air. |
| Filter option | The barrier protects the air path and does not filter the aspirated sample. |
| Residual liquid | Low-retention surfaces may help particular liquids; assess performance by weighing or recovery studies. |

Keep immersion, speed and dwell time consistent, especially for viscous samples.
Change tips between samples and avoid returning used tips to stock reagents.
Accuracy still depends on sealing, calibration and technique, not simply the aerosol barrier.
Extra blowout can depart from the calibrated method; handle residual liquid according to the pipetting procedure.
