UF and MBR: identify the role of the membrane
Distinguish standalone ultrafiltration from membrane bioreactors using feed conditions, net production and recoverability.

The feed defines the duty
Standalone UF commonly controls particles and colloids in a defined feed. MBR combines biological treatment with membrane solids separation, exposing the membrane to mixed liquor containing sludge. Identify upstream treatment and the destination of the permeate before comparing systems; membrane area or polymer identity alone cannot establish interchangeability.
- Record feed turbidity or suspended solids separately from MBR sludge conditions.
- State whether permeate goes to reuse, a downstream membrane stage or another process.
Particle removal is not desalination
UF should not be presented as removing all dissolved salts or all dissolved organics. If the target includes conductivity or a specific small solute, evaluate suitable additional treatment. Clear permeate can still contain substantial dissolved material, so appearance cannot establish the complete water-quality outcome.
- List turbidity, particles, conductivity and target solutes as separate measures.
- Use measurements rather than visual clarity as the acceptance basis.
Compare net output, not instantaneous flow
Backwashing, draining and cleaning consume water and time. Evaluate production together with these interruptions to understand net output. For MBR, also assess air distribution, solids accumulation and mixed-liquor condition before attributing reduced flow to membrane ageing.
- Log filtration, backwash, drain and downtime periods.
- Inspect membrane scouring and biological operating conditions separately.
Use trends to trigger investigation
Rising pressure at comparable flux, or progressively poorer recovery after the same approved sequence, warrants investigation. Account first for water temperature, feed loading and instrument changes. Cleaning chemistry and shutdown storage must follow the specific module instructions; there is no universal UF or MBR cleaning recipe.
- Compare pressure and flux under matched or properly normalized conditions.
- Record performance before and after recovery and any unusual feed events.
Common technical questions
Can an MBR membrane replace the biological process?
No. Solids separation and biological degradation have different roles in the complete treatment train.
Does more membrane area guarantee more output?
No. Feed supply, aeration, pumps, pipework and recovery capacity can limit production.
