Reading a data sheet: put each number back in context

Distinguish series options, typical values, operating limits and validation evidence to avoid transferring claims between models.

On this page

Identify the configuration before the series claim

A series page may combine several media, ratings, lengths, connectors and seals. An options table does not establish that every combination is orderable. Decode the complete product code into configuration fields and compare them with the drawing, materials list and ordering instructions.

  • Record data-sheet revision, date and complete model code.
  • List unresolved options rather than inventing a combined order code.

Maximum values may not apply together

Temperature, pressure and forward or reverse differential-pressure limits often correspond to different conditions. A room-temperature differential limit cannot be assumed valid at elevated temperature, and housing pressure does not replace cartridge differential pressure. Evaluate normal operation plus start-up, shutdown and maintenance conditions.

  • Attach temperature, direction and duration conditions to each limit.
  • Assess housing pressure and cartridge differential pressure separately.

Read axes and test conditions before comparing curves

Identify units, test fluid, temperature, area and configuration. A curve may describe only clean-filter resistance, not processing life with real feed. Typical curves are not automatically individual-unit acceptance values; clarify how the documentation distinguishes typical performance from specified release limits.

  • Mark the rating, length or effective area represented by each curve.
  • Separate real-fluid viscosity and loading from water-test conditions.

Turn missing information into a precise question

An image helps identify form but does not establish every connector or internal material. Treat omitted parameters as open questions rather than filling them from a similar product. Send the duty together with these gaps so the discussion addresses real differences instead of an unqualified maximum-flow request.

  • Supply fluid, target flow, temperature, pressure, connections and purpose.
  • Ask for missing conditions, test methods and applicable controlled documents.

Common technical questions

Does a series image show every listed option?

No. Confirm the ordered configuration against its specific drawing.

Can an omitted property be inferred from another model?

Not as a published performance claim. Treat it as a selection hypothesis requiring confirmation.
