Validation and maintenance
Clean or replace: decide from reuse qualification and evidence
Separate cleanable design, single-use limits, performance recovery and the quality requirements of the next use.

Establish whether reuse is permitted
Mechanical robustness or restored flow after rinsing does not qualify a product for reuse. Single-use devices and regenerable designs have different intended boundaries. Review exact-model instructions and the approved process to determine permitted reuse, required checks and any cycle or cumulative exposure limits.
- Confirm single-use or regeneration conditions in the instructions.
- Track sterilization, cleaning and holding history, not just operating hours.
Match the foulant and the assembly
A chemical that removes a deposit may not suit every wetted material. Assess membrane, support, joints, adhesives and seals. Do not transfer concentration, temperature or duration from one PES or UF product to another, or assume brushing and ultrasonics are permitted from the polymer name.
- Identify the deposit before evaluating allowed cleaning methods.
- Check chemical, thermal and mechanical limits for the full assembly.
Flow recovery is only one observation
Higher flow after cleaning can indicate reduced resistance, but alone does not establish restored retention, integrity or cleanliness. Compare performance under matched conditions and complete applicable integrity, residual and quality checks. Damage can also increase flow, so a hydraulic improvement requires supporting evidence.
- Compare pre/post data with the same test fluid and temperature.
- Record applicable residual endpoints, integrity results and disposition.
Complete the changeout and storage record
For replacement, use controlled isolation, depressurization and contaminant handling. Store reusable assemblies in their specified condition rather than applying a universal drying or soaking rule. Maintain individual histories so the next installation can verify remaining eligibility, storage condition and the last disposition.
- Link each assembly identity to batches and treatment records.
- Assign responsibilities for segregation, disposal and pre-installation checks.
Common technical questions
Is a visibly clean filter ready for reuse?
No. Appearance cannot establish retention, chemical residuals or microbial suitability.
Can cleaning extend the life of every cartridge?
No. Regeneration eligibility depends on design, controlled instructions and process validation.
