Construction & operating principle

A Petri dish provides a level support for growth medium and a space for observing cultures. The base and lid are generally not a hermetic seal; their geometry influences evaporation, gas exchange and condensation. Microbiological culture, membrane incubation and cell culture have different surface requirements, even when the vessels look similar.

Typical uses

  • Colony growth and streak isolation
  • Incubation of membranes after sample filtration
  • Enumeration under a defined microbiological method

Use & maintenance

  1. 01

    Medium preparation

Keep the base level so medium thickness remains consistent across the surface.

  2. 02

    Incubation

Use the orientation and environment specified by the method to manage condensation.

  3. 03

    Reading

Record time, sample identity and unusual growth while minimising repeated opening.

Product questions

Can any Petri dish be used for cells?

Microbiological dishes and vessels treated for cell attachment serve different purposes.

Why does medium dry first at the edge?

Evaporation depends on lid geometry, stacking, environment and incubation duration rather than diameter alone.
