Construction & operating principle

A gridded membrane links membrane filtration to colony enumeration. Microorganisms retained during filtration are transferred with the disc to an appropriate culture environment. Printed lines assist counting and location. Results depend on organism recovery, sample inhibition and contact with the growth medium, so neither colour nor pore rating alone establishes suitability for a microbiological method.

Typical uses

  • Membrane-based examination of water samples
  • Enumeration of culturable organisms under a defined method
  • Parallel tests using different sample volumes

Use & maintenance

  1. 01

    Filtration

Use a method-appropriate volume; excessive loading can block the membrane or merge colonies.

  2. 02

    Placement

Establish even medium contact without trapped air beneath the disc.

  3. 03

    Counting

Apply defined incubation and interpretation rules, retaining blanks and recovery controls.

Product questions

Does a grid enable automatic counting?

It assists positioning; automated interpretation still needs suitable imaging and validation.

Does no growth prove an absence of microorganisms?

Inhibition, inadequate recovery or unsuitable incubation can also produce a negative result.
