Formats and systems
Cartridge, capsule or bag: choose the service format
Compare connections, changeout, venting, drainage and batch losses so the format fits the way the process is operated.

Map one complete service cycle
Format influences receipt, installation, filtration, removal and disposal. A replaceable cartridge normally works inside a separate housing; a capsule integrates the medium and enclosure; a bag relies on its closure and support basket. There is no universal ranking independent of the process.
- Record batch volume, frequency and acceptable downtime.
- Define which wetted parts are reusable and which are single use.
A fit requires more than matching dimensions
Similar diameter or length does not establish a seal. End geometry, location features, seal arrangement and compression all matter. Capsules also require appropriate hose or connector support. Vents and drains must remain accessible once brackets and adjacent pipework are installed.
- Check end fittings, seal material and service clearance against drawings.
- Confirm flow direction, mechanical support and controlled vent/drain destinations.
Compare batch losses and labour
Beyond purchase price, compare unrecovered product, flushing fluid, operator time and housing preparation. Small high-value batches may be sensitive to hold-up, while continuous operation may be sensitive to changeout frequency. Use measured throughput rather than assuming equal length means equal capacity.
- Separate filter, tubing and sampling losses in the record.
- Normalize consumables and maintenance effort to acceptable batch output.
Reassess the complete assembly
Moving the same membrane into a capsule can change area, flow path and connection losses. A cartridge flow curve is not automatically a capsule curve, and sterilization methods are not interchangeable. Review the assembly limits and required quality documentation after selecting the format.
- Compare pressure drop at the same fluid, temperature and target flow.
- Rehearse start-up, sampling and changeout with the actual assembly.
Common technical questions
Is a capsule inherently sterile?
No. Sterilization status, packaging and intended use must be documented for its configuration.
Can a bag directly replace a membrane cartridge?
Compare retention requirements, test methods and system fit first; shape or price alone is insufficient.
