Construction & operating principle

Laboratory filter paper separates precipitates from liquids through a cellulose-fibre network. Thickness, fibre arrangement and wet strength influence flow and retention. Qualitative work prioritises clarification and handling, while quantitative analysis also requires control of ash and mass background. Paper grades are not universal pore-size guarantees and should be matched to the precipitate and subsequent analytical procedure.

Typical uses

  • Separation of precipitates after chemical reactions
  • Gravity clarification of laboratory liquids
  • Solid collection for quantitative analytical methods

Use & maintenance

  1. 01

    Installation

Fit the paper to the funnel without obstructing drainage and leave adequate filling clearance.

  2. 02

    Loading

Transfer steadily along a controlled path, keeping liquid below the edge to avoid bypass.

  3. 03

    Post-treatment

Follow method-specific washing, drying and conditioning, including the blank contribution.

Product questions

Are grade numbers interchangeable across brands?

Grading conventions can differ; compare application, retention and ash information.

Can paper replace a sterilising membrane?

Ordinary filter paper mainly separates solids and does not establish a validated microbial barrier.
