Look Beyond the Membrane

Follow the full wetted path

Fluid may contact the membrane, support layers, housing, core, end caps and seals. A membrane name is not a complete wetted-material specification.

Compatibility depends on conditions

Composition, concentration, temperature, contact time and cleaning affect selection. A general chart supports initial screening; it does not replace confirmation of the complete product.

Consider the entire operating cycle

Review cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and cooldown as well as normal operation, including changes in temperature and pressure.

Build a wetted-material register

Trace the path from the feed vessel outlet to collection and record each wetted component. The same membrane with a different housing or seal is a different assembly assessment. Keep non-wetted covers separate. This register reveals possible compatibility constraints and makes formulation-change review more efficient.

  • List membrane, support, end cap, housing, seal, tubing and connector materials.
  • Record material grade and the configuration document establishing it.

Assess what enters and leaves the fluid

Absence of cracking or swelling does not establish unchanged fluid composition. Components can release substances, while surfaces can bind the target. For purity-sensitive work, evaluate appearance, blank background and recovery together, and distinguish supplier extractables information from process-specific leachables assessment.

  • Use a complete-flow-path blank to investigate background.
  • Document changes to formulation, temperature or exposure time.

This general guide does not replace controlled technical documents or validation under actual process conditions.
