Process & filtration objectives
Power-plant makeup water, condensate and circulating cooling water have different origins and equipment-protection objectives. Makeup treatment serves downstream demineralization, condensate may carry corrosion products, and cooling loops can accumulate suspended material continuously.
Flow and startup loading also matter. Evaluate normal operation separately from unit startup to identify temporary high loads and make filter area, replacement arrangements and standby capacity more representative of service.
Typical process pathway
- 01
Separate duties
Document flow, temperature and downstream requirements independently for makeup water, condensate and cooling water.
- 02
Makeup pretreatment
Manage particles from raw water and upstream treatment to support the following demineralization equipment.
- 03
Condensate particle control
Observe suspended corrosion products during startup and after maintenance, keeping these records distinct from normal operation.
- 04
Cooling-loop maintenance
Track particles in full-flow or side-stream arrangements, linking filtration to blowdown and existing water treatment.
This is a typical task pathway. Confirm sequence, equipment and operating conditions for the project.
Filtration points & selection rationale
| Process point | Filtration task | Selection rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Before demineralization | Control particles in makeup water | Evaluate against equipment inlet requirements and changing raw-water conditions. |
| Condensate treatment inlet | Manage suspended corrosion products | Review actual temperature, differential pressure and assembly materials. |
| Cooling-water branch | Reduce suspended loading in circulation | Consider side-stream proportion, continuous loading and maintenance windows. |
Verification & operating records
| Evaluation item | Recording & comparison |
|---|---|
| Startup differences | Mark starts, load changes and maintenance events on water-quality and pressure-loss trends. |
| Particles and corrosion products | Use methods suited to the system, distinguishing suspended contamination from dissolved species. |
| Maintenance and supply | Record replacement duration, standby arrangements and processed volume when assessing supply continuity. |
Application questions
Can particle filtration solve every scaling problem?
No. Dissolved-salt concentration and chemical conditions also influence scaling and need assessment within the complete water-treatment program.
Can room-temperature ratings be applied to hot condensate?
Not directly. Temperature derating, seals and the complete assembly must match actual operation, rather than relying on an isolated cartridge rating.
